The government today said it will award four expressway projects, stretching up to 1,000 km, by the end of the year. The Transport Ministry had in November 2006 proposed four Expresways–the Vadodara-Mumbai, Bangalore-Chennai, New Delhi-Meerut and Kolkata-Dhanbad– totaling 1,000 km, to be developed under the National Highways Development Project.
“We will award these four projects by December,” Transport Secretary Brahm Dutt told reporters here today. He also said the qualification norms for bidding for these projects would be simplified to enable larger participation by domestic firms. “At present, the domestic firms have to join hands with international players to bid for bigger projects. We will make the bidding norms easier for domestic infrastructure firms to bid on their own,” Dutt said.
He, however, did not give specifics of the norms. The Ministry had last year planned 10 mega highways projects of 4,000 km each to be developed through public-private-partnership mode. He also said the Ministry is looking at ways to develop real estate along another 18,000 km of the expressways that it plans to build. The government had earlier proposed a nationwide network of expressways. The final master plan submitted for these stretches by the official consultant envisaged construction of 18,637 km of expressways at a cost of Rs 18 crore per km for a four-lane project and Rs 25.5 crore per km for a six-lane project. |
